Who We Are
Loose Thread Films is an independent Australian production company based in Brisbane. We focus on developing and producing grounded, character-driven stories.
Working across film and television, the company creates psychologically driven narratives that prioritise authenticity, behaviour, and emotional truth.
Founded by writer and director Jason Somerville, the company draws on real-world experience to inform stories that explore identity, perception, and the consequences of the roles people adopt to survive.
In addition to developing original projects, Loose Thread Films collaborates with writers, directors, and producers to bring strong, distinctive stories to screen.

No Further Action Desired (Documentary)
A Brisbane tradesman in his mid-fifties steps into an amateur drag night at the Wickham Hotel years after finding his teenage son Jack quietly practising a drag routine and answering him with reflex before love could catch up. After Jack takes his own life at fifteen, Mark carries a stolen kind of courage into the club to give his son, in memory, the answer he didn’t have in time to give him.

The Answer (Tropfest)
I Can’t Stay Bro follows Samuelu as he sits alone in a church before an important speech and is joined by his brother Junior. Their conversation begins with familiar teasing and childhood memories but gradually exposes an old wound. Samuelu left home to escape their hard father, leaving Junior behind. As the brothers confront what was never said, the meaning of Samuelu’s final words before leaving, “I can’t stay, bro”, comes back with devastating weight.

Jason Somerville is a Brisbane-based writer, director and executive producer working through Loose Thread Films. His work explores identity, the roles we perform and the question of how much of who we become is ever truly ours to author. That interest runs across crime drama, science fiction and intimate character work. He is also a published memoirist, has completed a second book manuscript, and hosts a podcast that has surpassed 60,000 downloads.
His screen work includes four feature scripts and a growing body of short films, three of which he has produced. His writing has received recognition from Australian and international screenplay competitions and film festivals, including wins, finalist placements, nominations and semi-finalist honours. Drawing on more than 35 years across policing, international tour guiding and recruitment, Somerville brings a strong understanding of people, behaviour and identity to work that moves between prestige drama, elevated genre and grounded character storytelling.
